Why this matters

Aksara Bali is a 1,000-year-old sacred script. In 2026 the Balinese government named its revival a cultural priority, as fewer and fewer hands can still write it. Every piece Ari makes keeps it alive a little longer.

Why this matters

A script worthpreserving

Aksara Bali is the sacred script of Balinese Hindu ceremony and the lontar palm-leaf manuscripts — a living writing system more than a thousand years old. It is not decoration. It is how prayers, names, and lineages have been recorded in Bali for a millennium.

Today it is at risk. Of roughly 4.4 million Balinese, fewer than one in ten can still write the script fluently. Indonesia has moved to protect it: Bali's Governor's Regulation No. 80/2018 supports wider use of Balinese script in public life, and the 2026 Bulan Bahasa Bali named its revival a cultural priority. Bali's lontar manuscript tradition is recognised as part of the documentary heritage of humanity.

To commission a piece is to become a steward of something rare. 3% of every sale funds Aksara preservation — supporting the people and organisations keeping this script alive for the next generation.

The Ritual

ᬩᬮᬶᬲᬾᬓ᭄ᬭᬶᬤ᭄ᬲ᭄ᬓ᭄ᬭᬶᬧ᭄

Every piece begins in silence — ink, handmade paper, and a prayer — and ends with a name that will outlive us all.

The Artist

A Balinese hand,not a Balinese font

Ni Nyoman Ari Swarbudiani

Founder · Artist · Native Balinese

Born and raised in Bali, Ari is one of a vanishing number of Balinese women who can write, read, and speak Aksara Bali. This is the script she grew up encountering in temples, in ceremony, and in daily Balinese life. It is a sacred and living language.

Of approximately 4.4 million Balinese, fewer than 10% can write the script fluently today. Governor Koster's February 2026 decree (Bulan Bahasa Bali VIII) named Aksara revival a cultural priority, and UNESCO recognises Bali's lontar manuscript heritage as part of the documentary heritage of humanity.

Every piece is made by Ari's hands. 3% of every sale is donated to feed the homeless and to BASAbali and the Hanacaraka Society, organisations preserving this script for future generations.

Questions

Before youcommission

How much does an Aksara Bali commission cost?

Pieces start at USD $100 for the Legacy Collection: Name Preservation, and from USD $300 for a Bespoke Commission (wedding vows, birth prayers, memorial, or hospitality installations). Final price depends on size, paper, and framing.

How long does a commission take?

Tell Ari your name and story on WhatsApp and she'll confirm a timeline for your specific piece — bespoke wedding and memorial commissions typically take longer than the Signature Legacy Collection frame.

Is Aksara Bali the same as a font?

No. Every piece is written by Ari's hand, stroke by stroke, in Aksara Bali — the sacred script of Bali. No font, no printing, no digital reproduction. Each commission is one of one.

Do you ship outside Bali?

Framed pieces can be collected or delivered within Bali, with international shipping available for framed and digital pieces. Ask Ari on WhatsApp for a quote to your country.

What comes with each piece?

Every commission includes a signed Certificate of Authenticity, a translation record documenting the intended meaning and cultural context, and a direct route back to the studio for future family names, prayers, or heirloom updates.
